Misc. bits and bytes

I only have 2 things going for me – my sense of humour.

***
Our company’s computer guy was in the office yesterday and said when he started something like 15 years ago his newsroom had 2 computers with 20 megabyte hard drives that cost $7500. Pretty hard to get your mind around that kind of leap in technology. Keep in mind computer disks now hold 700 megabytes, iPod’s are reaching 80,000 megabytes, and top end personal computers have 400,000 megabytes, quickly approaching 1,000,000 (1,000 gigabytes or a terabyte).

Bill Gates recently said, “If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

GM’s president responded with a list of 13 problems cars would have if GM had developed technology like Microsoft, including:

1. For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.

4. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on 5% of the roads.

12. Every time GM introduced a new model, buyers would have to learn to drive again because none of the controls would operate the same.

Have you ever been bobulated? How ‘bout whelmed or gruntled? Anyway just some (very) random thoughts for the day.

They call this east central Alberta. I went in on an office lotto pool for the record 6/49 draw. So when I connected to the internet and the first headline I saw was "group of co-workers in east central Alberta wins $54 million," I almost had a heart attack. I don't buy tickets often, just when it gets big. I figure if I'm going to pay my dreamers tax I might as well wait till it's a big dream. The winners are based less than 100 km away and some of them live within 30k. Everyone knows one of them.

I’m feeling rather overwhelmed and discombobulated as I work through the weekend and prepare to leave the province Monday, move 1,000 km away and start a whole new job etc.

Have fun moving Auren. Ya I heard about the big lottery winners, that's solid.

It's too bad we could never meet up in Red Deer while you were in this province. Enjoy the trip back, I might just be heading back that way eventually too.
